Kahoot quiz to teach values

I was teaching in Te Waahi1 for a day when the teacher attended PLD. I was thinking of away to consolidate the school values and for the students to express their understanding of the values. I wanted something that would be engaging and a fun way to express their understanding of them.
I decided to use Kahoot, a digital quiz making programme.  The class had not used this before so I wanted to give them an experience of using it, and then wanted them to create their own quiz.
I also thought that Laythin could use this quiz with his RTLB to create a quiz sharing his knowledge of dangerous animals. (Laythin has ASD and is obsessed with dangerous animals)

Reflection:
The students enjoyed this digital way of doing the quiz. The children compete against each other on the tv screen and this had lots of discussion about each value. But was cemented their understanding was making their own 5 question quiz for a partner around the school values.

Making their own quiz ensured they understood that value and could give a good example of that value in action. By giving the correct answer and 3 other incorrect answers also made them compare and contrast the school values.
This also was a great tool for Laythin with addition needs. He enjoyed making his quiz about his interest (dangerous animals) This was a way he was included with his class, doing the same thing as them but within his own interest. He really enjoyed his classmates doing his quiz. 

Draft Literacy Implementation Plan

We have developed the Literacy Implementation Plan (Draft) over the holidays.
This will be shared with staff and reviewed with them. Numeracy was developed in 2018 and Literacy will be reviewed in 2019.

Our next steps are to share this with the staff and create planning expectation guidelines for Literacy. Our Literacy Long term plans are created from the Literacy Learning Progressions and we need to review if these are meeting our needs or do these need to be changed.

See Saw: Digital portfolio

We have been using seesaw for 2018. Here is an info-graphic sharing information about the app. There is 104 families signed up and 1546 comments made by whaanau about their child's learning. This app allows professional relationships with parents that are based on their childs learning. See saw is used for children to reflect on their learning in classrooms. To share and reflect on their work and share these reflections with their parents. Our challenge for 2019 is ensuring that we get all whaanau signed up and provide places and opportunities for parents who do not have a smartphone to login to see their child's learning.

Learner focused culture: Rewards

One of the ways that Learner focused culture can be further developed is to reward the learners. At Tuakau School the Year 6 leaders lead the assemblies and we have a range of rewards. 
We have Barfoot and Thompson: Learner awards as above. These students get a $40 book voucher and this is given monthly.
We also give green cards for great achievements in learning. This initiative was created by myself and Vanessa when we were Principal and DP. These green cards were put in a green sparkly box and 5 were chosen weekly to have "Afternoon tea with the Principals" This initiative was successful and teachers stated that children were so keen to share their learning with us.

How does what I have learnt impact Tuakau School....

One of our strategic goals is 
Develop an educationally powerful partnership with the parents, families and whanau of their tamariki and explore opportunities to improve student agency and accelerate student achievement in mathematics.

What the research taught me is in order to create educationally powerful partnerships we need to create true equal recipricol relationships. We need to really listen to the families and hear their dreams and aspirations for their tamariki. We need to do things differently. Not just invite them to a meeting at school, led by us to tell them how we are going to work together to raise achievement.
We need to design the intervention together and we also need to involve the community. This is very timely as we are meeting Te Iwingaro Dunn tomorrow to talk about how we are going to engage our priority learners through our focus group.

Mindlab

November 2017 I started mindlab. It has been something that I have wanted to do for years but I did not want to travel to Newmarket. An opportunity came to do it in Bombay, which I jumped at.
I am looking forwardd to the Digital and Leadership PLD. Its going to be alot of work so I am going to have to stay on top of it and wrk hard to eep a balance in my life.
