Language Experiences

In Room 10 there is a group of students who are ESOL funded.  I understand that they need lots of language experiences to help them learn vocab, talk about shared experiences and have photos of these activities to scaffold them in their writing.

Here is a selection of photos from some of these activities.

I liked the Meercats in the tunnel. We looked through the holes in the tunnels and the Meercats were just standing there.

Students as Teachers Day

I have been thinking how to recognise all the varied interests of children in Room 10 so we have planned a "Students as Teachers Day"

We brainstormed different ideas that the children could do. Some of the suggestions so far are teaching the class a magic trick, to teach the class to count to 10 in Tongan.

Recognising the Cultures in Room 10

We identified the cultures in Room 10.
We have children that identify as NZ Maori, Tongan, Tuvalu-an, Kiribati/Gilbertise, Fijian, Indian, Russian and NZ European.

We researched the flags from these countries and made a display with the flags.

We created a greeting display with greetings from around the world.

We had a Students as Teachers Day on Tuesday the 30th of June. The children taught the class how to count in there languages. Sean taught us the animal names in Russian.
We noticed the similarities in Tongan, Samoan and Maori when counting but Kiribati sounded very different. I thinkher return and ask her to come and speak to the staff about life and scho this is due to the fact that Kiribati is in Micronesia rather than Polynesia like the others.

The Principal at Kingsgate School in Pukekohe has done her Sabbatical on Kiribati and I would love to connect with her on her return and get her to come and speak to us about her findings.
